New community safety zones will be established across Welland after city staff identified 43 segments near schools, parks, and seniors’ facilities that meet the criteria outlined in the Ontario Traffic Manual.
City council recently approved a report from transportation engineering manager Ali Khan who said the areas will be added to the city’s traffic and parking bylaw. Installation costs will be covered through the Niagara Region’s Vision Zero program.
Vision Zero is a road safety initiative aimed at reducing and ultimately eliminating serious injuries and fatalities on regional roads by addressing risk factors such as aggressive and distracted driving through the use of red-light cameras, automated speed enforcement cameras and community safety zones.
