Elbows up sounds pretty good to Cami Assembly workers right about now.
Workers at the Ingersoll automotive manufacturing plant Friday applauded the federal government’s tough stance, saying it will hit GM and Stellantis with increased tariffs after the automakers slashed production locally.
“We are fully behind this. If they want to sell here, they should build here,” said Brent Tree, president of Unifor Local 88, the union representing more than 1,100 workers laid off at Cami.
“We are in a mess today. There has to be a balance,” between manufacturing vehicles in Canada and selling them here.
“GM reneged on their commitment. We put $500 million of taxpayers’ money into (retooling) Cami and Oshawa and we expect more than them shutting the doors.”
