In a tragic incident, a 69-year-old Japanese tourist died after falling off the outer wall of the Pantheon in Italy’s Rome.

The deceased, identified as Morimasa Hibino, was sitting on the wall before he plunged 7 metres into the ancient landmark’s moat on Friday night, the Italian news agency, Ansa, reported.

The man reportedly fell after suffering a sudden illness that made him dizzy, according to his daughter, who was traveling with him, local media reported.

A priest who was passing by alerted the police when he saw the man lying in the ditch. Emergency services and firefighters reportedly had to force open a gate outside the ancient Roman site before finding the man dead in a ditch.

The Pantheon, which is also a Catholic Church, was closed at the time of the incident.
