The unlikely surge of the Hempfield field hockey team continued Saturday.
Entering the postseason with a 6-11 record and the No. 14 seed, the Black Knights have rattled off back-to-back wins, including Saturday’s District 3-3A quarterfinal win at Carlisle.
Hempfield (8-11) has earned a place in the PIAA tournament – its first trip since 2012 – while No. 11 Carlisle enters playbacks with a chance to earn District 3’s fifth and final states berth.
Corners carried the day Saturday as Hempfield scored its first four goals on restarts.
Junior Talia Leber shined with two goals and three assists.
Freshman Emma Epler finished the rebound of a Leber shot in the first quarter, the first half’s lone goal.
Leber and Epler reversed roles at the 12:37 mark of the third quarter.
