Ed Markey is not letting the federal government shutdown stop him from seeking more campaign donations in his reelection bid for U.S. Senate — a race that is starting to heat up.

As the career politician continues to vote against the GOP’s funding bill that would reopen the government, Markey has sent a warning to his Democratic supporters that he is short on campaign cash.

In an email sent from his campaign on Friday, Markey told his base that “the money isn’t there.”

“I know from experience that I can rely on this movement to help fill the gap with grassroots donations,” he stated. Markey, age 79, has served in Congress since 1976, the past 12 as senator.
