A man has been charged with breaching a domestic violence order following a car crash that resulted in the death of a three-year-old child. The incident occurred early Saturday morning in bushland north of the Gold Coast at approximately 5 a.m.
Authorities plan to file additional charges against the 24-year-old man, who is scheduled to appear in court on Monday. Reports indicate that the man fled the scene of the crash with a one-year-old boy. A witness observed the vehicle veering off the road and later transported a 22-year-old woman and the three-year-old boy to the Beenleigh Police Station.
Detective Acting Superintendent Mark Mooney confirmed that a temporary protection order had been in effect since June 2024, and the couple involved had been separated. "The three-year-old has sustained a head injury which has caused his death," Detective Mooney stated during a press briefing. He added that any prior domestic violence incidents between the parents will be part of the ongoing investigation.
After arriving at the police station, the child became unresponsive. Officers attempted CPR, but unfortunately, the boy did not survive. Detective Mooney commended the police officers for their efforts to revive the child.
The mother reportedly asked the witness to take her to the police station following the crash. The 24-year-old man, believed to be the driver, was located with the toddler at a residence in Beenleigh about 90 minutes after the incident. The boy was taken to the hospital for observation, while both adults were also evaluated and later discharged.
The police investigation is ongoing, and authorities are urging anyone with additional information to come forward.
