Hillary Clinton's recent criticism of Donald Trump's extensive renovations at the White House has sparked a heated online exchange involving both families. Clinton took to social media to express her disapproval of Trump's $300 million demolition project, which aims to replace the East Wing with a new ballroom.
In her post on X, Clinton shared an image of the ongoing demolition, stating, "It’s not his house. It’s your house. And he’s destroying it." This comment was aimed at Trump's ambitious plan, which has drawn mixed reactions from the public.
However, the backlash was swift. Social media users quickly reminded Clinton of her family's own controversies during their time in the White House. One user pointedly remarked, "Your husband had intimate relations in the Oval Office. Prolly should sit this one out." Another added, "Many of the presidents who resided there make changes for the positive unlike what occurred when you lived there."
The situation escalated when Chelsea Clinton joined the conversation. She published an Op-ed titled "Trump is wrecking the People’s House," emphasizing her connection to the White House since she was twelve. Chelsea stated, "The erasure of the East Wing isn’t just about marble or plaster — it’s about President Trump again taking a wrecking ball to our heritage, while targeting our democracy, and the rule-of-law."
Donald Trump Jr. responded to Chelsea's comments with a sharp retort, referencing past scandals involving her parents. He wrote, "Lol, your parents tried stealing furniture and silverware from the White House… and let’s not talk about the intern. Sit this one out." Reports confirm that the Clintons did remove $28,000 worth of furnishings and significant amounts of flatware when they left office in 2001.
The conversation also brought up the infamous Monica Lewinsky scandal, which has long overshadowed Bill Clinton's presidency. Lewinsky, who had a relationship with Bill Clinton while he was in office, has spoken about the impact of the scandal on her life. She described her feelings for Clinton as a mistake, saying, "I sort of fell in love with D.C. and the White House, and the job, and the environment and then, very unfortunately, I fell in love with my boss, who was married and also the most powerful man in the world."
Trump has faced his own share of allegations regarding extramarital affairs, including a high-profile scandal involving Stormy Daniels. Speculation about his relationships during his presidency continues to circulate, with some drawing comparisons between his former press secretary and Lewinsky.
Despite the heated exchanges, not all comments were critical of Hillary Clinton. Some users defended her stance, arguing that Trump's renovations would detract from the White House's dignity. One commenter stated, "She is right & all Trump is going to do is turn The White House into his tacky design of gold and white everything at taxpayers’ cost. He has no idea what class truly is."
Trump's renovation plans have already altered the Oval Office, which now features lavish gold-trimmed decor. The demolition of the East Wing began on October 21 and is expected to pave the way for a 90,000-square-foot ballroom, slated for completion before Trump leaves office in 2029.
