SURF CITY, N.C. — A massive house fire along the North Carolina coast burned up to three homes and sent thick black smoke into the sky Saturday afternoon, witnesses reported, according to WNCN.

The fire was reported around 5:30 p.m. on the north end of Surf City, located about midway on Topsail Island between North Topsail Beach and Topsail Beach.

Photos and videos posted on social media showed intense flames and a towering column of smoke. The Pender County Sheriff’s Office confirmed there was an active fire in Surf City early Saturday evening, according to WNCN.

Witness Marc Turner told WNCN the flames destroyed one home in the 1700 block of North Shore Drive, with two neighboring houses also damaged. The fire broke out about a block from the Trailer Bar and Tortuga’s Nest. An 11
