Over three million ballots have been returned in California’s statewide special election over Prop 50 , or whether the state uses new congressional district maps that could play a role in the 2026 midterm elections by shaping whether Republicans or Democrats have a majority in Congress.
Across the state, 3,682,872 vote-by-mail ballots have been returned, according to the California Secretary of State’s ballot count as of Wednesday, Oct. 22.
It comes as Californians have likely been bombarded with ads and mailers telling them to vote for or against the redistricting measure championed by Gov. Gavin Newsom and other Democrat state leaders — one major party voice to recently weigh in favor of Prop 50 was former President Barack Obama .
