In a huge win for the West Bengal government, the Supreme Court on Monday dismissed a Centre's petition that challenged the Calcutta High Court's order directing the resumption of MGNREGA, a 100-day rural employment guarantee scheme, in the state, after over three years.
The Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee scheme, launched by the UPA government in 2006, aims to enhance livelihood security in rural areas by providing at least 100 days of wage employment in a financial year to all adult members of a household.
The top court upheld a June 18 Calcutta High Court order that directed the central government to implement the MGNREGA, stalled in West Bengal since 2022, from August 1.
