San Lorenzo de El Escorial, Spain (WMTV) - On October 27, 1795, the Treaty of San Lorenzo, also known as Pickney’s Treaty, was signed.
The treaty granted North American ships the right to freely navigate the Mississippi River.
The deal resolved territorial disputes between the United States and Spain over Florida.
The U.S. gained control of trade through the port of New Orleans, which was under Spanish control at the time.
Before the treaty was signed, the western and southern borders of the United States had been a source of tension between the two countries.
The treaty was very popular and enabled American settlers to continue westward expansion.
Today, the Mississippi River continues to be a major player in worldwide shipping and commerce.
