In the last week, a mother allegedly left her day-old baby on the steps at Penn Station. Another woman allegedly tried to harm herself and a baby by wading into the East River in Queens.
The city and state have several programs in place so babies can be left at safe locations if parents feel they don't want the children or can't handle raising them.
In an interview with NY1, the commissioner of the city's Administration for Children's Services, Jess Dannhauser, said more parents and their families should know the signs of postpartum depression.
New York's Safe Haven Law allows parents to anonymously drop a baby off without facing criminal charges to hospitals, police and fire houses without facing criminal charges. This is for babies up to a month old.
