The speculation around President Donald Trump running again in 2028 includes a scenario where he joins the GOP ticked as the vice-presidential nominee, an idea he is dismissing as "too cute."
Trump said he’d "be allowed" to run as VP but won’t.
"I wouldn't do that. I think it's too cute," Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One on Oct. 27 as he was traveling overseas. "Yeah, I would rule that out because it's too cute. I think the people wouldn't like that. It's too cute. It's not - it wouldn't be right."
The Constitution limits presidents to two terms but Trump has toyed with the idea of a third, raising the topic during public events.
"I would love to do it. I have my best numbers ever," Trump said Oct. 27 on the prospect of running again.
Asked by a reporter if he’s not ruling out a 2028 bid, Trump said: "Am I not ruling it out? You’ll have to tell me."
Trump ally Steve Bannon continued to stoke Trump 2028 talk in a recent interview. Bannon served as White House chief strategist during Trump’s first administration and now hosts an influential MAGA podcast.
"Trump is going to be president in ’28, and people just ought to get accommodated with that," Bannon told The Economist on Oct. 23.
Among the ideas floated is for Trump to get elected as vice president and then have the president resign. Bannon said there are "many different alternatives" when it comes to keeping Trump in the White House.
"At the appropriate time, we’ll lay out what the plan is," Bannon said. "But there is a plan."
Even as he declined to rule out his own presidential bid, Trump continued to talk up Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio as potential 2028 candidates.
Rubio and Vance are both "great," the president said, adding: "I’m not sure if anybody would run against those two. I think if they ever formed a group it would be unstoppable."
