Tracking Melissa

Hurricane Melissa has become a powerful Category 5 hurricane in the Caribbean – and less than 150 miles from Kingston, Jamaica, the National Hurricane Center said Monday afternoon.

Melissa has sustained winds of 165 mph. It is moving west at 3 mph, the National Hurricane Center said.

"A slow turn toward the northwest and north is expected later today, followed by a turn toward the northeast and a faster forward speed on Tuesday." the NHC said in its 11 a.m. advisory.

The core of Melissa is expected to move over Jamaica Monday night and early Tuesday, move across Cuba Tuesday night and across the Bahamas Wednesday, NHC said.
