NEW DELHI: The Election Commission excluded Assam from the second phase of the nationwide Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise. The state is awaiting an assembly election soon. Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar justified the exclusion, saying the Assam issue was a matter still under the purview of the court.
There are special provisions in the Citizenship Act for Assam. The citizenship verification process being conducted under the supervision of the Supreme Court needs to be completed in the state. The National Register of Citizens has not been finalised yet. In this situation, Gyanesh Kumar clarified that it is not possible to conduct SIR in Assam at this time.
