STAMFORD, CT (WFSB) - A Connecticut-based nonprofit organization said it is ready to respond to Jamaica once Hurricane Melissa departs.

Americans, located in Stamford, said Jamaica faces catastrophic impacts from the storm.

Melissa strengthened to a category 5 hurricane on Monday.

“Our emergency response team is reaching out to our partners and closely monitoring the storm’s trajectory so we can be ready to respond if needed,” Americares posted to social media. “We urge everyone in the affected areas to stay safe by remaining vigilant and staying informed about the latest weather updates.”

Americans said its focus will be recovery and rebuilding.
