Veteran journalist Chris Uhlmann has urged the Coalition to challenge the Albanese government's "vastly expensive" pursuit of net zero, claiming the policy risked putting Australia on a "road to nowhere".

The energy debate has reignited over the past month, in large part due to infighting within Coalition ranks about whether or not to remain committed to net zero emissions by 2050.

Opposition Leader Sussan Ley has yet to formally declare whether she would retain the policy, which was placed under review following the May election, as she struggles to navigate persistent threats of a split between the Liberal and National parties.
