A Connecticut homeowner known for creating elaborate Halloween displays is sparking controversy for their dark decorations this year.

A large sign outside the Hamden, Conn., home reads “Asylum for the Criminally Insane." In the yard, decorations include nooses, hanging bodies, guards in towers and barbed wire fences.

“My first thoughts were that this was very disturbing. I first noticed the hanging bodies,” local resident Amy Baker told NBC Connecticut . “Certainly, I think the whole idea for an asylum for the criminally insane is insensitive to that community.”

Laverne Jackson told the outlet she traveled from New Haven to see the house and it was painful to experience.

“For a Black person like me, that’s very offensive to me and to my ancestors,” she says.
