A police officer has been seriously injured in a car crash in Western Sydney.

About 7.15pm on Monday a police car crashed into a guard rail at the intersection of Church St and Parramatta Rd in Parramatta.

The police car was under lights and sirens at the time and on the way to a priority incident.

A 23-year-old male probationary constable who was a passenger inside the car was trapped for a short time before being freed by NSW Fire and Rescue crews.

He was treated at the scene by paramedics for a serious arm injury before being taken to Westmead Hospital in a serious condition.

The driver, a 24-year-old male constable was not injured.
