It's no secret that here in the desert the midcentury modern aesthetic rules the roost. North Palm Canyon Drive is dotted with midcentury retailers and shining examples of MCM architecture are always the highlights of endless ooh-and-ah tours.

All the same, there are other interior motifs to be found here, and one of them is Asian. And if there is a single element of Asian design that is universal to that category, it is cloisonné. In fact, the skill and artistry that goes into cloisonné craftsmanship is quite remarkable, so today's column will dip its toe into this ancient art form.
