AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - Local nonprofits are stepping in to help as the government shutdown affects federal workers and SNAP recipients across the CSRA.
The YMCA of Greater Augusta is working to connect people with resources they need if they rely on SNAP benefits or are among the hundreds of thousands of federal workers not receiving paychecks during the shutdown.
Volunteer Daisy Herrington is still working to help kids in the CSRA, even after a career in elementary school teaching, as a food drive employee at the YMCA.
“I enjoy seeing the smiles on the kids’ face when they see something that parents come in the house with food they didn’t think they had, but they got some food to eat,” Herrington said.
