Minnesota Vikings quarterback Carson Wentz will undergo season-ending surgery on his left shoulder, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter.
The Vikings placed Wentz on injured reserve Monday.
Wentz has started the past five games for the team with starter J.J. McCarthy sidelined with a high ankle sprain.
McCarthy is expected to return to the starting role as soon as this Sunday against the Detroit Lions .
Wentz went 2-3 as the Vikings' starter but has been playing with a significant left shoulder injury that had him in obvious distress in Minnesota's 37-10 loss ot the Los Angeles Chargers last Thursday night. He said it "quite possibly" was the most pain he has been in during a football game and attributed it largely to his shortened recovery time because of a Thursday night game.
