WATERTOWN, New York (WWNY) - Four people are running for Watertown City Council in the election next Tuesday. On one topic, they all agree.

Watertown is spending more than it’s bringing in. In the 2026-27 budget, the gap between the revenue and expenses is estimated in millions of dollars.

Two likely answers are to raise property taxes by double-digits or cut expenses.

For the 4 people running for city council, cutting expenses likely means eliminating city jobs.

“I think that double-digit tax increase is totally unacceptable. On the city’s website right now, we have multiple vacancies on the city’s website. I think we could kind of start there just to kind of determine, are they necessary, are they not,” said candidate Doug Osborne.
