Down the road from Washington Court House, Jared Persinger of South Plymouth Pumpkins has officially set a new Ohio record with his massive 2,505-pound pumpkin. The giant gourd was recently hauled south to the Operation Pumpkin Festival in Hamilton, where it broke the previous state record by more than 100 pounds.
Persinger, who started growing pumpkins just a few years ago, says the accomplishment comes from daily care, soil management, and a passion for the hobby. In this interview with Ohio Ag Net’s Joel Penhorwood, he shares the story since the seed was planted in April.
Amazingly, Persinger’s pumpkin took second place to a site record set by New York grower Scott Andrusz at just 13 pounds heavier. But in Ohio, Persinger’s achievement now stands as the largest pumpkin in the Buckeye
