WASHINGTON — Millions of Americans could soon lose access to SNAP and WIC benefits as the federal government shutdown continues. Hunger relief organizations across the D.C. area say they’re seeing more families struggling to put food on the table — and they’re preparing for the situation to get worse.
For Humberto Lopez, a furloughed Department of Defense electrical engineer, the shutdown has already meant missed paychecks and mounting bills.
“I’ve got a mortgage, a little girl in daycare — which is like a second mortgage,” Lopez said. “We’ve talked to the bank. They’re going to put our mortgage in forbearance.”
“They’re still getting paid. We’re not getting paid,” he added.
