GREENSBORO, N.C. — Hurricane Melissa intensified to Category 5 strength Monday as it neared Jamaica, bringing the threat of catastrophic flooding, landslides, and life-threatening storm surge.

Vacationers Staying Calm
Bridgette and Wayne Todd from Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, are at a resort on Jamaica’s northern coast for their honeymoon and anniversary. Even as Melissa approaches, they remain surprisingly calm.
