RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) - Republicans are opposing efforts to advance a redistricting amendment, labeling the entire process unconstitutional, as lawmakers in Virginia reconvene for the session just days before Election Day.

Lawmakers from both sides of the aisle were called back to Richmond for this urgent return to session.

The House has already held a first reading on the resolution and will return on Wednesday for another vote.

A total of three readings is required for legislation to pass out of one chamber and be sent to the other.

Both the House and Senate must approve the measure for it to move forward.

Democrats are defending their push for the amendment, saying it is the only viable option they have at this moment.
