THE BRONX, N.Y. (PIX11) — At the Top Choice Jamaican restaurant in Wakefield, lunch was on the menu. But for employees behind the counter, their homeland and loved ones were on their minds.
The Category 5 Hurricane Melissa and its 160-mile-per-hour winds are shaping up to be the most powerful storm to hit Jamaica. It's forecasted to be even more powerful than Hurricane Gilbert, which left a quarter of the island nation's population homeless in 1988.
The focus in the Bronx community? Muster up resources now to be ready to send emergency food, water, clothing and other resources after the storm passes.
"I spoke with my sister, I spoke with my friends," Kim of the Bronx said. "Very scared. Water, everything, lights going out. I'm very scared."
