NEW YORK (PIX11) -- As temperatures continue to drop, many people may start turning to space heaters and other appliances to keep their homes warm.

While space heaters can offer much-needed warmth, malfunctioning or damaged units can create serious hazards and have been linked to several deadly fires in New York City.

Every year, officials urge caution when using the appliances.

New Yorkers should adhere to the following safety guidelines: • Space heaters should be at least three feet from anything that can burn. • Space heaters should be turned off when leaving a room or going to sleep. • Space heaters should only be used for a limited time every day. • Do not use an extension cord.
