MCLEAN COUNTY ( 25News Now ) - McLean County government is offering a compromise to Bloomington and Normal in an attempt to prevent the filing of a lawsuit over a shared sales tax intended for behavioral health and public safety programs.
Bloomington and Normal sent the county a notice of default on Sept. 11, claiming the county violated terms of a sales tax agreement between the three governments.
The two cities have been sending to the county tens of millions of dollars, to be placed in a special fund. Earlier this year, leaders learned the fund had built up an unused balance of more than $20 million.
The discovery led to the hiring a firm to conduct an independent audit, and votes by both city councils to cancel the monthly payments to the county for at least a year. Stopping those
