BENZONIA — With the state final meet around the corner, the Mason County Eastern and Pentwater co-ed cross country teams took their talents to Benzonia on Saturday looking to secure a spot in the Division 4 state finals race.

Competing in the Michigan High School Athletic Association D4 Regional 29 race, the Cardinals took home fifth place in the boys 5,000-meter event with 113 points. The Falcons finished in ninth place with 230 points.

Glen Lake (1st, 34 points), Leland (2nd, 87 points) and Mesick (3rd, 102 points) rounded out the top three finishers.

The best local finisher in the boys race was Mason County Eastern sophomore Lance Niedzielski. He grabbed fifth place with a personal best time of 16:27.60 and qualified for the state finals race on Nov. 1.
