Forty cats were rescued after being found in a San Diego studio apartment.

The San Diego Humane Society said the elderly owner had been hospitalized and was no longer able to care for the cats. The Humane Law Enforcement Office found out about the situation back in August when a concerned neighbor reported that multiple cats and a strong odor was coming from an apartment on Imperial Avenue near 14th Street.

At least 16 of the cats have been adopted, with more still available to take home.
