Police say finding a car could be a crucial "missing piece of the jigsaw puzzle" as they continue their murder investigation into the death of father-of-two Chris Robertson.

The 49-year-old Moana man was found dead inside a Lonsdale workshop on O'Sullivan's Beach Road on September 30.

Earlier this month, police declared his death a major crime and said Mr Roberston died as result of his injuries after being seriously assaulted.

Detective Superintendent Darren Fielke said police were seeking help from the public to find a grey Mitsubishi Triton utility with licence registration XTF976.

The car was captured on CCTV at the workshop the day after Mr Robertson was last seen alive celebrating with friends on the AFL Grand Final weekend.
