High alert has been issued in Andhra Pradesh and Odisha as cyclone Montha is all set to turn into a 'severe' cyclonic storm and make landfall by Tuesday evening.
Around 1419 villages and 44 towns are likely to be impacted as the cyclone will cross the coast between Machilipatnam and Kakinada in the evening or night.
According to an Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) bulletin, the cyclone lay about 450 km south to southeast of Kakinada, 420 km east of Chennai, 500 km south to southeast of Visakhapatnam and 670 km south to southwest of Gopalpur (Odisha).
The system is likely to intensify into a severe cyclonic storm by Tuesday morning, and is likely to make landfall with a maximum sustained wind speed of 90-100 kmph (and) gusting up to 110 kmph.
