Queensland's deputy commissioner of police, Shane Chelepy, has announced his retirement.

One of the state's top cops, he has been a member of the Queensland Police Service for nearly 40 years.

During that time, he worked in various frontline and leadership roles, including a recent stint acting as commissioner.

"It has been an absolute honour to be part of the QPS and a privilege to serve alongside so many dedicated and professional people," he said in a statement.

"Throughout my career, I have been continually inspired by the way this organisation responds — through every challenge — to keep our communities safe. "

Speaking in state parliament on Tuesday, Police Minister Dan Purdie described the outgoing deputy commissioner as "respected, trusted and steadfast".
