BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ( WBRC ) - At least six people from Birmingham are stuck in Jamaica, hunkering down as Hurricane Melissa is expected to make landfall soon.

What was supposed to be a birthday celebration has turned into a scary situation as what could be the most powerful storm to ever hit Jamaica approaches the island.

Jerrie Foster said her family had plans to vacation in Jamaica to celebrate her husband’s 70th birthday. Foster and her husband decided last minute to stay home after seeing storm warnings last week.

Six of her family members stuck to the plan. They’re staying at Royalton Blue Waters Resort in Montego Bay.

Foster said they originally planned to leave Monday, Oct. 27, but after seeing the warnings, they bought earlier flights set to depart Sunday afternoon. Unfortunate
