JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Nearly three million Floridians could lose access to food assistance if the federal government shutdown continues past Nov. 1, with half of those affected being children, State Representative Angie Nixon (D - Jacksonville) said Monday.

“I have a child who's five years old, in addition to four other children," Nixon said. "And I know how they act when they go to school hungry. We don’t want anyone to starve here in the state of Florida."

Food banks across Florida are reporting growing demand while supplies dwindle. Nixon said she spoke with Feeding Northeast Florida, which told her it does not have enough food for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program recipients.
