The body of an elderly woman has been found on a remote island after the company she was cruising with notified authorities when she failed to return to the boat.
The elderly woman in her 80s was reported missing on Lizard Island on the Great Barrier Reef north-east of Cairns on Saturday, sparking a major search effort.
She had been on a tour with Coral Expeditions, and is believed to have been hiking on the island when she disappeared, according to The Cairns Post.
The search for the woman involved both the ship’s crew and a rescue helicopter, and went into the night on Saturday.
The body of the missing passenger was found on Sunday after the search resumed that morning.
A report will now be prepared for the coroner following the woman’s non-suspicious death on the island on Sunday m
