KALIHI (Island News) -- Staving off hunger by lining up at a food drive. It was a first for many federal workers like Dan.

"This is my first time and I looked for resources online not knowing when this whole federal shut down how long will it last," he said.

Hundreds of cars were lined up on Rose Street in Kalihi, federal workers in many cases going to work every day, but not getting paid.

"Not getting paid nope, working for free at this time," said Marlene Sagucio, a federal government worker.

And the timing could not be worst -- right before the holiday season.

"They might just get a handshake for this Christmas," Dan said. "You kind of have to hold back and eat sandwiches probably for the rest of the holidays."
