There is a former state legislator in my town whose views I find to be highly suspect but whom I have come to admire. She is a longtime public servant who has remained active in community affairs well into her retirement.
Though we disagree, on several occasions, she has invited me to lecture on election-related topics. I recently spoke to one of her groups about efforts to reform our state’s ballots.
A few months ago, upset by the outcome of a certain election, I texted a close colleague with whom I also disagree politically to ask what he thought its implications would be. His response: “Prosperity!!”
When I followed up with him, he explained his views calmly and thoughtfully. Despite our differences, we remain trusted friends, and we often text each other throughout the day.
