BHP says it will redeploy as many workers as possible at its Yandi iron-ore mine in the Pilbara, where production is about to be scaled back.
"Yandi's production profile has steadily ramped down in recent years, and we now need to adjust the mine plan to meet current and future operational requirements," a BHP spokesperson said.
The mine employs about 600 direct staff, and supports about 150 contractors.
The company said it would need to consult further with the Yandi workforce before it would know how many jobs would be lost.
The Western Mine Workers Alliance (WMWA), a multi-union collective, expected the final figure would between 100 and 150 jobs.
"This is never good news, you know they're good-paying jobs," WMWA coordinator Shane Roulstone said.
