The bad news just keeps coming, unsurprisingly, on the recruiting trail for Penn State .
Three-star 2026 safety Darrell Carey officially decommitted from the Nittany Lions on Monday . He was one of the first to publicly “reopen” his recruitment after James Franklin was fired on Oct. 12.
Carey was the third former Franklin recruit to change plans, joining four-star wide receiver Jahsiear Rogers ( flip to Oklahoma ) and three-star cornerback Jaziel Hart ( North Carolina commitment ).
Carey had been committed to Penn State since April 18. A DeMatha Catholic (Md.) standout, Carey is the No. 664 player in his class and No. 49 at his position, according to the 247Sports Composite. He’s a big safety at 6-2.
247Sports and On3 each list Maryland as the favorite for Carey’s services movi
