GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB) - Next Tuesday, Gainesville voters will hit the polls to decide who controls Gainesville Regional Utilities. This comes after more than a year of controversy following the state appointed board taking control.

Members of Alachua County NAACP and the Visionaires are hosting a town hall meeting on Tuesday to discuss the upcoming November referendum.

It all started in July of 2023 when after signing a new state law giving him the authority, Governor Ron DeSantis appointed a state board of directors to control GRU.

Last year, city of Gainesville voters approved a ballot amendment to return control of the utility to the city, but a judge ruled the language was too unclear.
