LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Thousands of Kentuckians, along with millions of Americans, are bracing for another blow brought on by the ongoing federal government shutdown: the loss of SNAP benefits.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture has indicated funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program is running out, and November benefits will likely be halted.
“I think we should open the government; the sooner, the better," said Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky. "I voted last week to at least start paying the people who are working."
Statewide, approximately 600,000 Kentuckians receive some amount of SNAP assistance. Earlier this month, the USDA began warning state funding for SNAP was running out.
Paul said he hopes the shutdown can end within the next two weeks.
