East L.A.— Julian Maxwell, a sophomore at Ednovate Encore Arts & Media College Prep , sometimes turns to Artificial Intelligence to help with writing assignments.
His social studies teacher, Andrew Hoekstra, also uses AI to analyze grades and adapt lessons for different classes.
“I love it, it makes my job easier,” Hoekstra said.
While debate continues over AI’s role in education, the nine-school Ednovate charter network is actively exploring the technology. A visit to Ednovate Encore Arts & Media offers a glimpse into how AI is being integrated into daily work, but also how it's met with resistance.
Teachers are receiving training and piloting AI tools for classroom use, said Marisa Viscal, assistant principal of instruction at Encore.
Hoekstra warns students about AI's pitfalls.
