A 31-year-old man was critically injured early today after crashing his moped on Keolu Drive in Kailua, Honolulu police said.

Police said the man was traveling south on Keolu Drive near Akumu Street shortly after 12:30 a.m. when he lost control and struck a concrete curb, throwing him onto the roadway.

He was taken by Emergency Medical Services to an area hospital in critical condition.

Police said the man was not wearing a helmet. It was not immediately known whether speed, drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash.

The investigation is ongoing.
