A recent analysis of polling data suggests that Canadians are viewed more favorably than U.S. President Donald Trump by American citizens. During a segment on CNN, chief data analyst Harry Enten shared insights on the stark contrast in popularity ratings. He reported that Trump has a net popularity rating of -10, while Canada enjoys a net rating of +49, a difference of nearly 60 points. "When you pick on Canada as the United States president, you are picking on a country that the American people adore," Enten stated. He added that historically, the last U.S. president to achieve a higher rating than Canada was George W. Bush in the early 2000s. Enten's analysis is based on data from two surveys conducted by the Pew Research Center in 2025. The first survey, released in June, involved 3,605 Americans and found that 74% held favorable views of Canada, while 25% viewed it unfavorably. The remaining respondents either had no opinion or declined to answer. In contrast, a survey conducted in early August with 3,554 participants indicated that Trump's approval rating stood at 38%, with a disapproval rating of 60%. The discussion also touched on U.S. sentiment regarding tariffs imposed by the Trump administration. Enten noted that Americans have increasingly opposed tariffs, stating, "Americans have moved more against tariffs than any other major Trump policy that he’s been pushing during the second term." In a survey from November, 52% of Americans supported tariffs on imported goods, but that figure has since dropped to 40%. A more recent survey indicated that 60% of respondents believe the Trump administration is overly focused on tariffs. Enten advised, "If I were advising President Donald John Trump when it comes to his policies, I’d say step off the tariffs, at least from a political point of view, because the bottom line is it doesn’t sell with the American people." He also highlighted that only 36% of Americans support new tariffs on Canada, based on an April poll conducted by Ipsos. This analysis comes amid tense Canada-U.S. trade relations, exacerbated by an Ontario anti-tariff ad campaign that led to Trump canceling negotiations with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. Trump has also proposed an additional 10% tariff on Canadian imports, though details regarding implementation remain unclear. Furthermore, Enten discussed the changing perceptions of Canadians towards the U.S. over the past two years. Data from Angus Reid surveys revealed that in October 2023, only 7% of Canadians viewed the U.S. as a potential enemy. However, a more recent survey indicated that 46% of Canadians now see the U.S. as a threat, with 24% advising caution in dealings with the neighboring country. This evolving sentiment reflects a significant shift in the relationship between the two nations, as both countries navigate complex trade dynamics and public opinion.
