The federal government shutdown is nearing the one-month mark, causing widespread effects for millions of Americans.

Some states are scrambling to find ways to account for shortfalls in food and child development assistance due to the shutdown.

Federal SNAP funding and funding for a group of Head Start preschool programs is set to run out Saturday. Aid for mothers to care for their newborns through the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children, known as WIC, could run out the following week.
