COLUMBIA, S.C. — With federal SNAP food benefits set to stop this weekend due to the ongoing government shutdown, Governor Henry McMaster on Tuesday announced an emergency effort to help feed more than half a million South Carolinians who may soon lose access to food assistance.
Speaking at the South Carolina Emergency Management Division in Columbia, McMaster said the state is reactivating the One SC Fund, a statewide charitable fund originally created after the 2015 floods, to direct donations to food banks and local feeding programs.
“This is a time of trial when food for a lot of people has been cut off by the dysfunction in Washington,” McMaster said. “We are once again left to ourselves, but South Carolina is prepared to meet this challenge.”
