LAS VEGAS (KLAS) -- An investigation into the alleged murder of an inmate at High Desert State Prison is underway. Dylan Walters, 33, was stabbed and then pronounced dead at University Medical Center on Tuesday, according to the Nevada Department of Corrections.

Walters was transferred to prison in April 2024 to serve a 16-40 month sentence for attempted grand larceny with a value of less than $3,500, the department said. Prosecutors wrote in court documents that Walters stole a dog and tried to open the door of the dog owner's Las Vegas home.

Walters had a criminal history that included arrests for resisting an officer, residential burglary, drug crimes, and indecent exposure, along with violations of a ban from areas including the Las Vegas strip, according to court records.
